CERTAIN PASSAGES OF SCRIPTURE FOR VARIOUS HOLY ORDERS AND POSITIONS, ADMONISHING THEM ABOUT THEIR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To Employers and Supervisors
Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him. [Eph. 6:9]
Pastor’s Commentary
As we learned from the previous passage for Workers (“Slaves”), St. Paul also calls upon “Masters” – Employers – to live in healthy fear and in joyful trembling before the face of God. As with husbands and wives and children, workers and employers are to see that the other is a blessing from the hand of a gracious God.
For the master, whether over the household slaves of the ancient world, or the modern employer or manager of workers, your work and vocation as a master is under Christ Himself, who rules all things in heaven and on earth. Masters are to “do the same” as the employee is to do for them, “rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man.” (Eph. 6.7) For if the master does not treat those given to him from the Lord to work for him with fairness and according to the Ten Commandments, even if there is no direct temporal consequences, St. Paul reminds the master, there are eternal consequences. Jesus will judge impartially at the Last Day.
