The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6. The Divine Service is at 7pm. Lauds is prayed at 9:30am, and Vespers at 4:30pm.
On Ash Wednesday, the pastor places ashes upon the forehead in the sign of the cross, reciting the words of Genesis 3: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ashes signify the mortality of mankind due to sin. The lessons are Joel 2.12-19, 2 Peter 1.2-11, and St. Matthew 6.1-6, 16-21.
Lent is a 40-day season focusing on:
- the Passion of Jesus Christ;
- penitential reflection; and
- catechesis.
The Ash Wednesday Gospel directs us to the disciplines of Lent:
- increased prayer;
- increased fasting; and
- increased almsgiving.
Join us for the Ash Wednesday Divine Service on March 6 at 7pm. Each of the following Wednesdays we will pray Vespers at 7pm with the sermon series “Lent with the Lord’s Commands.”
